If you are staying on the Crikvenica Riviera, here are eight great places my born and raised Croatian local husband, Igor, and I highly recommend visiting in this charming, seaside city that are sure to make your stay most enjoyable. This includes our favorite beach, restaurant, cafe, bar, bakery and market. We always return to these places every time we are in Crikvenica and if we have family or friends visiting, we make sure to take them at least once to these great spots.
1. Kačjak Beach
Even though we have a lovely beach only five minutes walk from our rental apartments, our most favorite beach is a scenic bike ride or short scooter, motorcycle or car ride away. This beach is in the town of Dramalj, which is part of the Crikvenica Riviera. From Crikvenica's main square, drive north along the coast until the road comes to an end, where a little bay is surrounded by rental cottages and a small boat landing. There are large rocks to climb on, jump off of into the water or just sunbathe on top of. Park along the side of the road and take one of the many stone staircases down to paved platforms. Just a one lane road separates the sea from some beautiful villas and if you need a drink or bite to eat there are a couple cafes to choose from nearby. Due to it's location outside of the main part of town, the beach is never overly crowded and can feel like your own little hidden location. If you are a fan of nude beaches, just a little further north you will see on the sidewalk the markings "FKK," which stands for Freikorperkultur in German, which translates to free body culture in English.

Not only is this our favorite restaurant, but also it is only a five minute walk from our rental apartments. It's somewhat hidden but you pass it on the way from downtown Crikvenica south toward the town of Selce. Croatian cuisine at it's finest and a beautiful view of the Adriatic to go with it. The food is delectable with a picture perfect presentation. You may dine inside where you get to see the chefs do their magic or dine outside and watch boats sail by. Ask about their set menu that includes an olive oil and wine pairing with each dish. An ideal place for a special occasion or if you are just looking for a great culinary experience.
3. Kavana Toš
This caffe is along the main street through Crikvenica. When the weather is cold, this is where you'll find us sitting. It was recently renovated and has a cozy, contemporary style with glass walls that open when the weather is nice. There is plenty of seating and it is a great location to people watch. Service is always excellent, even when it's busy. With your drink comes a complimentary cookie or chocolate and glass of water. Also, they have a wide selection of delicious cakes (kolač) made in house or ice cream (sladoled) that will satisfy any sweet tooth.
Školjka sits in Stjepana Radiča square in front of Crikvenica's main port and marina, where all the tour boats dock. Only a small part of this cafe is indoors, which is usually left completely open to the outside. The rest of this caffe is outdoors composed of comfy chairs covered by awnings. Service is always splendid, even when it's crowded. With your drink comes a complimentary glass of water. A perfect place to watch daily life of locals, visitors and sailors. If there is a festival, concert or other event going on in the square, then you have one of the best seats to watch.
Sax sits further north along the sea at another one of Crikvenica's marinas. The locals call this area, Črni Mol or Mul. They have a large area for indoor and outdoor seating. You can even sit outside across the street right above the pier and boat slip where sailors are coming and going. Next door, boats are available to rent and there is easy access to a playground and small, yet popular beach as well. This is a family run business with the owners and their children found making and serving drinks and even the grandfather can be seen sipping a coffee occasionally. They host fun, special events throughout the year to partake in.

Sabbia is a restaurant during the day and turns into a popular lounge bar and night club at night. Located right on the beach, so you can get your drink and then go put your toes in the sand. There are all kinds of theme nights during the summer and they bring in popular guest bands, DJs and singers to perform. Igor and I had our wedding reception at Sabbia in 2014 and this year celebrated our 10 year anniversary in the same spot, so it will always hold a very special place in our hearts.
7. Pekara Aroma
This bakery is in the main market area of Crikvenica. Everything is baked fresh, from scratch daily. The earlier you arrive in the morning, the better selection you will have and it's always crowded or there is a line because it's just that good. Most Croatians buy fresh bread every day if they are not making it at home. It is very common in Croatia to have a pastry for breakfast.
My favorite pastry to get is the apple or cheese strudel (strudel od jabuke/strudel od sira). Igor's favorite is a filled donut of chocolate or jelly (krafna- see picture) or a rolled pastry called piroška.
8. Market Ana
Crikvenica has several big box chain grocery stores but we love to support this small business. This cute little market is only a two minute walk from our rental apartments. If you need a few groceries or toiletries this is the most convenient spot. The shopkeepers are always super friendly and helpful. In the summer season they are open early and close late.

These are eight great places on the Crikvenica Riviera, Igor's hometown. Give them a try and see what you think? We are confident you will not be disappointed.
Many have been to the southern coastal part of the country, like Dubrovnik to take a "Game of Thrones Tour", visited the city of Split as one of their cruise itinerary ports, or stopped off at one of the islands, like Korčula, Hvar and Brač, but most have not seen the north coast regions of Croatia and we highly recommend you do.
Whether it's your first time traveling to the country or just the next time you're here wanting a more authentic, less touristy experience. Europeans have been vacationing at this hidden gem for decades but others seem to completely overlook it. Come see for yourself what makes the north coast so special.
